CHICAGO- The Saint Xavier University American Red Cross Club is run by student athletes; President, Michelle Tourtillott, Vice President, Marissa Young, and Treasurer, Alex Barone, are all members of the women's basketball team, and Secretary, DeVon Chandler, is a member of the men's basketball team. There are many other student athletes that are members of the club including some from the women's volleyball, cross country and track, and soccer teams. The club was actually started up by another women's basketball player, Jackie Heine, who is now an assistant coach for the team.
Each year, the club hosts two blood drives that are held at Saint Xavier. The club has also helped out with other causes such as "Hope for Haiti" boxes. These boxes were sent to Haiti and were filled with soap, toothpaste, and other essentials. The club is now in the process of setting up an event to raise money for those in need of help in Japan after the tsunami.
When men's basketball player, DeVon Chandler, was asked why he decided to join the club, he answered by saying: "I joined becauase Michelle, a good friend of mine, asked if I would be interested in an officer position and of course I said yes. The first reason was that I enjoy helping people and I figured this would be a positive way to do so. The second reason was because it is always fun to be a part of something with your friends. It will also look good on a resume that I was part of this organization."
One of the nice things about student athletes of different sports taking part in organizations together is that it helps form a sense of community among the teams. Being a smaller school, it is easier for the athletes to get to know each other, and many attend each others games to cheer on their fellow Cougars.
