CHICAGO- Every Tuesday, members of the Saint Xavier women's basketball team, host "Movie Tuesday" at Southwest Chicago PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter). Brittany Jones, Marissa Young, and Michelle Tourtillott are in a class called God and Social Action. One of their assignments is to participate in community service projects throughout the semester.
Southwest Chicago PADS was started in 1993, and has been run by Sister Therese for the past 15 years. Here, the homeless are presented with food, shelter, showers, clothing, and ongoing assistance with life skills. "PADS, an ecumencial and community endeavor, which values dignity, uniqueness, goodness, and giftedness of all persons, assists people with moving from homelessness to stable employment and housing." Usually, the building is only open in the evening where they serve dinner and provided the opportunity to shower and get more clothing. Since the girls have basketball in the afternoons and evenings, they were able to put together a weekly event called "Movie Tuesdays." Every Tuesday, the girls go to the shelter around 10:00am and bring a video that was voted on the week before, and a D.V.D. player, and hang out with visitors for the morning. They also bring them snacks each week.
"We enjoy going every week, and the visitors really appreciate it," said Tourtillott. "Its something easy and fun that we are able to do to help out in the community." Movie Tuesdays gives those in the neighborhood a chance to hang out inside and relax, especially during the colder months this year.
