CHICAGO- Saint Xavier University Football Player, Matt Munizzi, jumped into Lake Michigan for the Polar Plunge after raising around $500 for Special Olympics. Matt has been helping out at the polar plunge the past 10 years, but this year (the 11th year) he decided to "take the plunge." He has been helping out at this event for so long because his aunt used to be the president of Special Olympics.
The Polar Plunge is one of the events put on by Special Children's Charities. "Special Children’s Charities’ primary mission is to promote, foster and encourage physical and mental health and improvement for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and closely related developmental disabilities" (quoted from the Special Children's Charities website). They have many different types of activities and competitions for the children to take part in such as a state basketball competition, Special Olympics, aquatics competitions, and gymnastic competitions, just to name a few. Munizzi raised money by creating a fundraiser page on Facebook and asking his family members for donations. His family members were very supportive since they have been involved in this event for many years. "This is one of the best charities for Special Olympics," noted Munizzi, "the tally of what this event brings in is just unbelievable." The temperature of the water was no warmer than 34 degrees when Munizzi and his other fellow supporters jumped in the water.
Come watch Munizzi and the rest of the SXU Cougars this Fall in their 2011 season. The past two years the team has entered playoffs with an undefeated season, and they continue to improve every year. Click Here for more information on Saint Xavier Football.
