CHICAGO- The Saint Xavier University women's basketball team had some new fans to help cheer them on at their Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) opener Saturday against Roosevelt University (Ill.). The team won a nail-biter by a score of 78-75 at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Local Evergreen Park Girl Scout troops attended the game, all wearing specially made red T-shirts and brought hand-made signs to show their support for the Cougars. There were about 175 Girl Scouts and their family members in attendance. The SXU players displayed teamwork and leadership throughout the game and were examples of role models for the girls to look up to as strong, motivated and dedicated women.
The Girl Scouts of Chicago's website states that the Girl Scout Mission is to "build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place." Saint Xavier University Athletic Director Bob Halberg thinks this was also an excellent opportunity to help not only promote the women's basketball team, but the SXU Athletic Department as well.
"Events, such as this, are just another way in which our athletic department surrounds itself with the community," said Hallberg. "We think it is important to entertain and motivate young people who someday, in the future, will be making college decisions."
Both the men's and women's basketball teams at Saint Xavier University have various youth and sports groups come out to attend its home games. They also dedicate games throughout the year to their "Shoot with the Cougars" events, where they invite the younger fans to interact with the players after games and shoot around with them on the court. Both teams pride themselves in displaying great leadership qualities for younger kids to look up to and follow.
