CHICAGO- Every university team of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) that is a postseason qualifier, selects a player to represent the team for the "Champions of Character" initiative. This past year, four of Saint Xavier University's athletic teams, made it into the post season, therefore selecting four players to represent the program as a Champion of Character.
The "Champions of Character" program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA's proud history of innovation. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official, and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship. The first of the players selected as Champion of Character in the 2010-2011 school year at Saint Xavier was senior, Brennan Rooney. Rooney was a Tight End during his career as a Cougar.
"Brennan epitomizes what the NAIA's Champions of Character program is all about," said SXU's football coach Mike Fiminis. "He is a smart, hard-working young man with a bright future and I can't think of a better representative from our team for this type of award."
Other players selected as SXU Champion's of Character this year include Alan Bickel from men's soccer, Danielle Malloy from women's volleyball, and Brittany Jones from women's basketball.
